Correct me if I'm wrong, but I am seeing what looks like $370 million over 3 years towards education spending vs $5 BILLION for two phases of the Fraser Valley Highway 1 corridor improvement program. Not suggesting Hwy 1 improvement isn't necessary but 32 km of highway getting $4.63 billion more than the investment towards education in BC is hard to wrap my head around. A fraction of that kind of money would be nothing short of a generational change to education and students in this province.
To be very clear, the $370 million over 3 years doesn't actually represent an increase in per student funding and an increase of 2.6 per cent after inflation represents essentially no new real funding (student numbers continue to grow and along with that comes the required additional "investment").
The NDP's recent campaign promise of an EA in every K-3 classroom and a mental health counsellor in all schools is not going to come to fruition either. What does this mean? School districts' will have to continue pulling from their already stretched operating grants to ensure adequate EA and mental health supports in schools.
Another missing element - any further investments in child care spending including programs like Seamless Day, Just B4 and strong start programs.
